It's festival time at DMS! This year's Ancient Greek Festival will be a culmination of our studies of the ancient world.
Each class is taking on the role of an ancient Greek city-state.
Period 1:Corinth | Period 2:Mycenae/Crete
Period 3: Sikyon | Period 4: Delphi
In typical Olympic fashion, the festival will center around several FRIENDLY COMPETITIONS: DRAMATIC, ARTISTIC, AND ATHLETIC
You will be assigned a unique character and you will dress, speak, and act in character throughout the day. (10 points for character and costume)
Your costume will be historically accurate and will indicate your social status as well as your city-state of residence. Awards will be given by the Olympic Committee for outstanding costumes, as well as outstanding effort to be in character!

The festival will begin with a Olympic-style flag bearing procession around the school grounds. Each city-state will walk as a group, in costume and in character. Each city-state will work together to create a flag that represents their unique character. They may also create and carry props that are appropriate to their city state. The Olympic Committee will recognize the city-state(s) whose procession(s) most capture the spirit of ancient Greece.
In the second part of the morning, the entire school will gather for a dramatic competition in the Theatre of Dionysus (exact location TBA). There will be two categories of competition: short plays and odes. The ode is a traditional Greek form of poetry. Each city state will present a play. At least one individual from each city-state with present an ode. The Olympic Committee will honor a winner from each category at the end of the dramatic competition. (10 pts for your contribution to your city-state's play.)

Lunch will be a potluck banquet.
After lunch, the athletic competition will begin. Sporting events will probably include: javelin, shot put or discus, (sock) wrestling, footrace, and race in armor. For each of this events, there must be at least one competitor per city-state. You increase the chances of victory for your city-state by fielding more competitors. Events will occur one by one in the Olympic Stadium (exact location TBA); you are expected to be present for all events to cheer and support your city-state. (10 points for your participation in the athletic events and your support of your fellow citizens!)
The final athletic competition is the chariot race; each city-state will field at least two chariot teams. Each team will consist of a chariot, charioteer, and two (human) horses. Chariots may be modified skateboards, wagons, wheelbarrows, etc. They must be pulled by the horses only, and have no other means of propulsion. The charioteer must wear a helmet, and the chariot must be sturdy and safe for all involved. The winner gains the love and adoration of all of Hellas, not to mention an important honor for their city-state.
At the end of the festival, the winning city-state (who has accumulated the most awards throughout the day's competitions) will be honored at a closing ceremony.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
