Ancient History

What is "civilization" and where did it come from? Do we know the roots of our own civilization? Our religious, artistic, and scientific heritage is not the inheritance of a single, isolated group of people. Instead, it the result of innumerable civilizations interacting over thousands of years.

We will begin the year with an exploration of early human societies, and develop an understanding of the archaeological tecniques that allow us to learn more about our distant ancestors.

Our second unit will explore the early civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt, as well as the emergence of the Ancient Hebrews. We will concentrate on the cultural diffusion amongst these civilizations, exploring their exchange of customs, inventions, and religious beliefs.

Our third unit will investigate the early civilizations of China and the Indus Valley. We will explore their astounding scientific accomplishments, as well as their philosophy, poetry, and religious traditions.

Our fourth and final unit will concentrate on the exciting world of Ancient Greece, culminating with the Greek Festival.

In addition, we will have an Ancient Science Fair, showcasing the incredible inventions of the ancient world. We will also investigate the historical causes which have led to the collapse of the great civilizations. We will also devote time to a study of the world's great religious traditions.
